About

The program is named in honor of Bertha Guhl. Bertha Guhl became interested in the work of the Samaritan Counseling Center in 1999 because of the Center’s work with children. She and Eldon had a wonderful marriage for 57 years before his death, but her greatest disappointment in life was that they had no children of their own. Born November 25, 1906, Bertha Guhl grew up in Massachusetts. After her marriage to Eldon they followed his career as a U.S. Navy officer. They settled in Albuquerque after Eldon’s retirement, and he died here. She later moved to Riverside California where she died in 2003. Mrs. Guhl made several generous gifts to the work of the Samaritan Counseling Center in her lifetime, and remembered the Center in her estate. Mrs. Guhl was a woman of lively curiosity and deep faith. As she neared the end of her life she said, “I do find myself looking forward to what is to come. It’s an adventure.” Her embrace of life’s adventure, her love for Eldon, and her generous spirit will live on in the healing work of the Bertha & Eldon Guhl Center for Children and Adolescents of the Samaritan Counseling Center.
